A few questions for everyone here. what are the best towing options for a pre-owned 4Runner with an automatic tranny? can I tow it behind a Class C motorhome without using a trailer or should I just get a small camper instead?

Whoa there, hold your horses a minute. Most modern automatic 4Runners can't be flat towed without causing big time damage to the transmission. You're way better off using the 4Runner to pull a small camper, which is what those things were born to do. What year is your rig?

If it's an automatic 4runner, flat towing, all four wheels down is a no go, toyota def doesn't approve it and you'll risk cooking the transmission, use a full trailer or a dolly that lifts the drive wheels off the ground, simple

Right. Though there are kits available that add an auxiliary pump to keep the transmission lubricated, making flat towing possible. Also, depending on the 4Runner's year, installing manual hubs on the front differential is a simple and affordable fix to help with towing. For my other 2WD truck, I added a quick-release to the driveshaft so I could flat tow it easily.
