If a Limited doesn't have the drive mode selector knob, is it just 2wd ? and if it does have the knob, does that mean it's awd with a locking 4wd option? cos some people say all limiteds are awd no matter what, and the knob just adds off road modes. I'm really confused by all the conflicting info, anyone clear this up?

I'm gonna make this short and sweet
If there's no knob, it's 2WD.
If there is a knob, it's full time AWD with a center diff lock.
All Limiteds aren't AWD, depends on the region.

If the Limited doesn't have the drive mode selector knob, it's likely 2WD. @Tecla.S explained it real good. Some models of the Limited might be AWD by default you know.

Good question, most Toyota Limited trims, like the 4Runner or Highlander come with full time AWD, even if theres no drive mode knob. That knob typically controls all terrain settings, not whether it's AWD. Anyway, to confirm, check the window sticker, VIN build sheet, or owner's manual

Both the GX460 and 4Runner are great choices, but it depends on what your in laws value more... comfort or ruggedness. The GX offers a more luxurious ride, quieter cabin, and nicer features, while the 4Runner is simpler, more utilitarian, and still very capable off road.
